A Dayton native, Anderson Johnson will begin as Principal Tuba with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in the 2026–27 season. Johnson has performed with the orchestras of Toledo, Knoxville, Lansing, Battle Creek, and Oak Ridge. In early 2026, he won First Prize in the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Audition Competition. As a soloist, Johnson has earned recognition in several competitions, including finalist honors in the 2025 Michigan State University Concerto Competition and 2023 University of Tennessee Concerto Competition, as well as the 2026 Heartland Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Competition and Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo Competition. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Johnson has performed with graduate and faculty brass quintets, tuba trios and quartets, and a variety of tuba/euphonium chamber ensembles. He is currently a member of Leonidas, a quartet composed in the style of an orchestral low brass section and dedicated to advancing the low brass chamber repertoire. His ensembles have been named finalists in the Barbara Wagner Chamber Music Competition in both 2025 and 2026, regional tuba-euphonium conference chamber competitions in 2020 and 2022, and appeared as guest artists at the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop in 2023. In addition to his performing career, Johnson currently serves as Limited-Term Lecturer of Tuba and Euphonium at Purdue University Fort Wayne while completing a DMA at Michigan State University. In his free time, he enjoys weightlifting, exploring local coffee shops, and reading.
