Joshua Christian Childress is a jazz saxophonist from Los Angeles, California. Joshua received his bachelor's degree in music with a concentration in commercial music at Biola University and his master's degree in Jazz Studies at CSU Long Beach. Joshua has gone on to perform for companies such as Converse and DiscoverLA and has had the opportunity to work with R&B/soul artist Kelly Rowland, legendary band Imagine Dragons, Aloe Blacc, FINNEAS and more. Joshua is not only an active performer and teacher but a music producer as well.
During his early childhood, Joshua started his musical journey by picking up the clarinet in the second grade. Later in his middle school years, he had heard a college jazz band and he was in awe of their performance. Finding out what jazz music was, Joshua had grown fond of the art and wanted to perform in the jazz band. His musical instructor had encouraged him to pick up the saxophone and thus Joshua had started playing saxophone along with the clarinet in middle school. Joshua realized his talent for music during his high school years. Throughout this time he competed in several jazz competitions and festivals and won soloist awards. At the end of his high school year, he won the Woody Herman Jazz Award at Redondo Union High School. During his undergraduate, Joshua played in the Biola University big band and had also won multiple soloist awards from jazz festivals. He had won one of the top soloists from the 2018 UNC Greeley Jazz Festival and the 1st place College Saxophonist award from the 2019 Reno Jazz Festival at UNR. In his current studies at CSULB, Joshua received honors of best soloist in the Western States Jazz Festival along with recognition of his big band arrangement of Billy Strayhorn's "Upper Manhattan Medical Group" which is featured on the Concert Jazz Orchestra of CSU Long Beach Before and After album. Along with this Joshua was also blessed to work with and play alongside world-renowned trumpeter Wayne Bergeron. This then catapulted him to start his professional career post his college career.
Currently, Joshua is a jazz director at Whittier Christian High School, an adjunct professor at Compton College & Biola University. Joshua is also a music educator and ambassador for the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles.
